I was joined by Steve Hinch and his new bride Edyta. It was a perfect week with early morning temps about 40 and warming up to 70. There was hardly a single cloud in the sky all week. A big thank you to Edyta for serving up SMORES each night around the camp fire.

Cades Cove has been preserved by the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to look much the way it looked in the 1800's. Once home to a small mountain community, whose settlers came from Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee, Cades Cove is today the largest open air museum in the entire Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Cades Cove is home to several pioneer homesteads, barns, pasture and farmland - a fitting tribute to the hearty people who lived here in the days of yesteryear.

The draw in late October is the fall foliage. There is an eleven mile loop road through the Cove valley and during the fall season it can take two to three hours to travel the loop. I've included a few pictures here from the trip. To see more, please visit my web site at www.ddouglasphotos.com.

I spent the time recovering from surgery and am feeling great and ready resume all my fun activities of photography, swimming and cycling.

This past week I visited Circle B for the first time since last spring. There is not much happening yet but with the cooler temperatures and migrations starting up we should begin to see more activity soon. With the nice rainfall in September there is plenty of water in the marshes. Shortly after arriving I saw this Belted Kingfisher perched over the marsh. I watched as he would dart off over the water and quickly dive for small fish, then return to his perch. This shot was taken with Canon 7D, Canon 500mm + 1.4 extender at f/5.6 at 1/500 sec.
In the same area I spotted the following bird perched just taking in the new morning sun. I wasn't sure what it was until I asked a friend to help with identification. It is a female Red Winged Black Bird, as in most birds, so different from the male.
My last post was from my first week spent in the Tetons searching for moose. My luck with moose continued to be good with several more sightings in the Tetons and also several in Yellowstone. After a week, Karen and friends, Ron & Iris Smith, arrived and we moved to Yellowstone for the next two weeks. This was the Smith's first trip out west so our goal was to see and experience as much as we could in two weeks and we certainly did. We hiked nearly every day with several hikes that were new to me. I believe we all agreed the three favorite hikes were Phelps Lake in the Tetons, Mount Washburn and Delacy Creek to Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone. After two weeks the Smith's returned to Florida and we headed to Glacier Nat'l Park. The first day was spent driving the Road to the Sun and showing Karen the park. The next day we joined a ranger lead hike to Upper Two Medicine Lake. The ranger talked all about the eatable and medicinal plants of the region. As luck would have it, Huckleberries were ripe and ready for picking so we snacked on Huckleberries all during the hike. After being gone for almost a month we decided it was time to return to Florida so cut our Glacier time short a few days and headed home.

Even with all the hiking I did find time for photography so would like to share a few of my favorite memories with you.

The first photo is from Schwabachers Landing along the Snake River. The short drive down a rough dirt road is worth the trip for a wonderful view of the Tetons and their reflection in the still waters of the landing.

In Yellowstone's Hayden Valley things were getting excited with the bull Bison in"rut". During this time the males aggressively court the females and are focused on either intimidating other males or finding love with the bison ladies. One of their strategies for impressing the females is to wallow in dusty areas know as a bison wallow. The bull below maybe spent too much time in the wallow. You'll notice he has his selected lady close by.
I quickly heard about a large bull moose frequenting the river nearby. That night he didn't show until 8:00 pm, much to dark for pictures but I decided to return each evening until I was able to photograph him. He was a no show the next three evenings but was able to get pictures of several cows, one with two young calves. Last night I arrived at 5:00 and there he was just across the river.

We visited Circle B this weekend and found one of our usual trails closed due to alligator nesting activity. So we decided on the trail down to Lake Hancock where we took refuge on a pier to escape the mosquitos. The pier is covered to provide shade from the sun and there was a nice breeze blowing off the lake. At any time you could count at least 20 Osprey in the air over the lake searching for fish. The Osprey is also known as the Fish Hawk, a very appropriate name.
There wasn't much going on and most of the pelicans, spoonbills and storks were on the wrong side of the trail for the morning sunlight. With little wind I did find several nice reflection shots to share with you. Remember to "click" any picture to enlarge.
There are still some Black-bellied Whistling Ducks around the marsh. This pair never moved while I was there.
We found a number of spoonbills still in the area but only a few remaining white pelicans. Wood storks were everywhere but I've given up on trying to make one of them look attractive in a picture. We did have a nice fly-by from one of the adult eagles and managed to capture several photos of him. So here are some of todays best.
We visited Circle Bar B Reserve three mornings last week and had a great time each visit. Our sightings included otters, barred owls, new sandhill crane colts, herons, egrets, pelicans and many more. I was surprised to find a pair of new sandhill crane colts out on Wading Bird Way. Here are a few shots of them. I especially enjoyed watching the little colt walk along the water's edge.

Over the course of the three visits we found two adult Barred Owls and each had two young Owls from this year nearby. This is one of the young ones.

Next we found this Black-crowned Night Heron perched above the canal in almost perfect light. This was a wonderful full frame shot, with no cropping.
As we scanned the marsh we spotted two adult Bald Eagles perched in a cypress tree near the center of the marsh. This was taken with a 500mm lens and and 1.4X extension, for equivalent of 700mm. This is cropped about 50%.
Some last minute issues came up that will need my attention so will be enjoying the heat of summer in Florida this year. We do still have a trip planned in August to visit Teton, Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.

I visited the Circle Bar B Reserve this morning for the first time in a month. My goal was to find the Sand Hill Crane family and see how the young colt is doing. I did find the family below and watched the family feed in the marsh for over an hour. The colt would be about 6 to 7 weeks old now.
As I approached the spot another photographer informed us the owlet had jumped from the nest earlier that morning and not seen since. From our viewing point you cannot see the ground below the nest. So here are a few pictures taken over the last several weeks.

This is mom standing on the rim of the nest. The nest is actually in a cavity below where mom is standing.

This is dad who was always nearby keeping watch. Several times mom and dad would call back and forth to each other as if to ask "is everything ok?'.
I'll save the Barred Owl for a separate post and provide an update on the Cranes here. The Colts are now about ten days old and are able to follow the parents pretty much anywhere. They are often seen up on the pathways around the Reserve and are not at all shy around people. After spending four hours waiting on the owls we were leaving and found the Cranes on the path as we were leaving. As they were walking toward us I sat along the edge of the trail and got the following pictures as they walked to me. They passed right by as if I wasn't there. The photos are a little "harsh" in the noon sun, but they are still cute.

After passing by they left the trail into high grass. Here is one last photo before they disappear in the marsh.

As I mentioned above we waited for four hours for one of the adult owls to return to the nest for feeding but it never happened. We did get a few photos of the chick peeking out of the nest and a picture of dad in a tree nearby. My next post will be on the Barred Owls.
We were told one hatched overnight Wednesday night and the second Thursday night. Mom was still on the nest and the two colts peeked through the feathers and climbed on mom's back. Here are my four favorite pictures (took several hundred) from Friday morning.
I will be following these little guys over the next few weeks. It is amazing how quickly they grow. I'm also watching a Barred Owl nest and was able to confirm today that there is at least one baby in the nest.
We didn't get many photos but are excited about what the next several weeks will bring. We located nests for sand hill crane, barred owl, red shouldered hawk, blue heron and a limpkin. All of these nests are viewable from trails in the Reserve. We could see movement in one of the heron nests but too early for pictures. We did come across this raccoon along the water's edge.
At 140 years old it was our first national park. As most of you know I'll be returning to Yellowstone this summer, again working at the Lake Hotel Front Desk. I'm looking forward to another summer with old friends, making new friends and of course capturing the beauty of Yellowstone in pictures. As I begin to plan my trip I wanted to post a few of my favorite pictures from previous summers.

Of course the Bison is the iconic symbol of Yellowstone. Spring time brings the birth of new "little red dogs".
With us were friends from working in Yellowstone; Larry & Sue and Marie. Marie was vacationing at Ferandina Beach and invited us to stay for a few days. It was a fun Yellowstone reunion. Our primary goal was to photograph the birds of the famous rookery there. It is still a little too early to see chicks but the Great Egrets put on a great show for us. We also saw Spoonbills, Snowy Egret, Wood Stork, and Black-Crowned Night Heron. Below are several photos of the Great Egrets.
We also visited the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine. There is a large rookery there with nesting Great White Heron, Snowy Egrets, Spoonbills and Night Herons. They are still in nest building mode but it was great to see the White Herons in their breeding plumage. So look for my next post later this week with photos from St. Augustine.
Thanks for visiting. David
You are able to drive through both locations, stopping for pictures. Although windy and cool it was a good day with several new birds added to my picture library. Probably the highlight of the trip was a large flock of Roseate Spoonbills that flew overhead. We also saw Redish Egret, Northern Pintail, Ring-Necked Ducks, Northern Shovelers, White Pelicans, and the usual assortment of herons. Here are a few pictures from this trip.
Sunday morning was warm and sunny and we weren't looking for gators but found several that we could not pass up photographing. This first one was just off the trail keeping a keen eye on us as we snapped a few pictures.

This fellow was also along the trail and stopped to watch us pass by.

This is my favorite with mom keeping an eye on one of her babies.

Of course we were also looking for birds along the way. Early on the hike we found this Purple Gallinule brightly lit in the morning sun light. Gallinules are somewhat rare so this was a welcome find.

Last is the Sora that we've seen for several weeks along Wading Bird Way.

The first is a Sora, a member of the Rail family. They are found in wet marshes mainly along the shore line with tall grasses. (remember to "click" on a picture to enlarge)

Next is a Turkey Vulture. I would not normally stop to photograph a vulture, but found his open wing pose to be interesting. Maybe he thought he was a Cormorant.

On first arriving a group of eight Roseate Spoonbill flew overhead and landed in a small pond right by the trail. In the same pond were cattle egrets, snowy egrets, glossy ibis and several sandpipers. Below are a spoonbill and snowy egret from this pond.
We stayed at this pond for about an hour before moving to an area known as Wading Bird Way. Along the way we spotted several American Bitterns and a Sora. I also stopped to photograph this Blue Heron perched high in a tree. Early morning lighting was a real benefit to this shot.
Along Wading Bird Way we photographed several ducks but I liked this ring-necked duck the best. The reflection in still water resulted in a mirror image.
A low fog hung over the marsh until the sun was well up. Nothing really new this morning, many egrets, cranes and herons. I would like to share the following pictures with you taken over the last two weeks at Circle B.
(remember to "click" on a picture to enlarge)
This group of wood storks seemed to be contemplating their next move.
This northern shoveler came close enough for some nice photos. Also have recently seen widgeons, blue wing teals and red head ducks.
And finally as we were leaving this morning this osprey was on the prowl for a meal.
Over the holidays I got a new Apple computer and am going through the process of moving all pictures from the PC to the iMac. I'm also going through a learning curve moving from Photoshop Elements to Apple's Aperture 3. I have visited the Circle B Reserve a few times but still not seeing the bird numbers of the last few years. I did hear this morning that white pelicans have returned this week so will check it out tomorrow. Last week we found this Anhinga trying it's best to consume this fish but just couldn't get it down. The last picture in the series of four shows what finally happened after about ten minutes. (remember to click on picture to enlarge)
The Blue Heron swept in, grabbed the fish and immediately swallowed it.

I'm about half way through moving all pictures to the new iMac and maybe half way through the learning curve of this new system. I did learn this week that I will be returning to Yellowstone for the summer season again working at the Lake Hotel.
